How to Use Games for Safety Training

Natalia Olive - Safety Education & ConsultingImagine you’re a long-tenured employee at a manufacturing facility. This is your 12th year with the team, and your annual HazCom training is due this week. How do you feel? Excited? Intrigued? Or rather holding your breath, hoping it’s over quickly and nobody notices how bored you are?

For seasoned staff, a classic lecture style is ill advised for recurrent topics, especially those required once a year. Instead, consider applying more dynamic training techniques, such as group discussion, on-the-job demonstration of skills and games. In particular, games offer a chance for all participants to interact, making it easier to blend experienced with novice attendees and still meet all key learning objectives.

Over the years, I’ve used a few training games that have worked very well, and here are my recommendations for you.

  • Spread out a variety of Personal Protective Equipment and have attendees “race” to don all the required PPE for a given task, using relevant real-world examples. Works best in smaller groups up to 8 people.

  • Try a “Safety Pictionary” game, where attendees take turns drawing an image relevant to the topic at hand, with the rest of the team trying to guess before their competitors. Works better with 3-4 people per team, 3-4 teams per group.
  • Divide the class into three teams and play “Safety Jeopardy!” using a specially designed PowerPoint presentation (contact Natalia for a sample). The game play is the same as on TV’s “Jeopardy!”, including a “Daily Double” and a final question for extra credit.
  • For large groups of 12-30 people, play “Safetyball”, a version of baseball where questions are asked and answered in large groups (10-12 people per group). Each question is on a card, with an assigned “bases run” value depending on difficulty. People take turns “at bat” and are out when a question isn’t answered correctly.
